Shoes on the Danube Bank Memorial
Budapest, Hungary

Sixty pairs of shoes made from iron have been placed along the eastern shore of the Danube River in Budapest in memory of the many (mainly) Jews who were murdered along the river by the Arrow Cross party between 1944 and 1945. The victims were marched to the bank of the river and forced to remove their shoes. They were then shot and their bodies fell into the river and were carried downstream. Hundreds if not thousands of people were killed by these execution squads.
